You won’t want to miss this June 2026 review of the delightful book, When You Dream Big! This charming book is written and illustrated by one of Dr. Toughlove’s favorite author/illustrators, Peter H. Reynolds. Enjoy!
Dr. Toughlove is really excited about his latest story, entitled When You Dream Big! The setting for this book is a classroom where the teacher, Miss Rayna, asks her students “Who’s ready to dream big?”(p.2). Charley, the main character, has no idea. The pressure builds as Miss Rayna gives the children wings and asks them where their wings will take them. Charley’s classmates embrace this idea and are labeling and decorating their wings. Charley sits despondently in her seat, and has no ideas.
Peter H. Reynolds’s illustrations and words artfully depict Charley’s classmates’ creations. The children want to be engineers, actors, astronauts, doctors and so much more. Charley’s wings are still blank.
Dr. Toughlove doesn’t want to give the story away, but she can share that Charley uses her toes to look forward and create her unique response. She emerges from this experience stronger and more confident. Charley answers Miss Rayna’s question by creating her own vision, which is different, but just as viable as those of her classmates. She also inspires her friends with her ingenuity. Several empowering messages are embedded in this delightful picture book.
If Dr. Toughlove had to identify three words to describe this book she would say enchanting, optimistic, and joyful. Peter H. Reynolds uses colorful illustrations to reinforce the ideas and words contained in When You Dream Big! Substantive discussions with youngers can take place around finding their place in the world, believing in themselves, and celebrating others.
When You Dream Big! is an ideal picture book for kids aged 4-8, but can be enjoyed by youngsters and adults of all ages. It can be found at your local library.
