Dr. Toughlove reviewed \u201cThank You, Mr. Falker” by Patricia Polacco for her September 2022 column.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School has officially begun, so Dr. Toughlove thought it would an ideal time to review the book \u201cThank You, Mr. Falker\u201d by Patricia Polacco. Ms. Polacco is an author and illustrator who has written and illustrated dozens of books, many of which were inspired by her own life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThank You, Mr. Falker\u201d is a book about a girl named Tricia who loved books as a preschooler, but had a terrible time learning to read.  \u201cWhen Tricia looked at a page, all she saw was wiggling shapes, and when she tried to sound out words, the other kids laughed at her.\u201d (p. 7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Tricia\u2019s mom got a teaching job in California, the family moved there from her grandparents\u2019 farm in Michigan. Tricia was relieved to leave her current school and hoped that when she went to a new school she would learn to read \u2013 but alas that did not happen. She felt different and dumb and began to hate school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fifth grade, still not reading, she was placed in Mr. Falker\u2019s class. Mr. Falker was young and charismatic and all the children liked him. Most importantly, he recognized Tricia\u2019s artistic talent and sparkling intellect, despite her reading difficulties. Let it suffice to say that he changed her life for the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many years ago, Dr. Toughlove worked in a school district that hosted Patricia Polacco for several days. Dr. Toughlove remembers her warm, kind nature and her ability to relate to children, particularly those who may have challenges learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Dr. Toughlove had to use three words to describe \u201cThank You, Mr. Falker\u201d she would say inspiring, engaging and enlightening. This book is recommended for children aged 5-9, but Dr. Toughlove has seen first-hand that older children can relate to this touching story. When adults read this book aloud, they have an opportunity to discuss learning differences, empathy, bullying, problem solving and a whole lot more. There are multiple possibilities for rich conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
