Did it make you feel sad? If you answered yes to these questions, Dr. Toughlove recommends you read “Evelyn Del Rey is Moving Away”, written by Newbery Medalist Meg Medina and illustrated by Sonia Sánchez.

This charming picture book, written in 2020, tells the story of two girls, Evelyn and Daniela, who are best friends. Daniela describes Evelyn as “my major amiga, my numero uno best friend.” (p. 3). Daniela and Evelyn are inseparable, and because their apartments are across the alley from one another, they can see each other even when they are apart. They are “almost twins” and share secrets, hiding places, games, stories, stickers, tears and love. But then…..all of the boxes are packed, and it is time for Evelyn to leave for her new home with her family. It is a sad day for both of them.

Dr. Toughlove loves Sonia Sánchez’s whimsical illustrations and Meg Medina’s profound words. This combination portrays joy despite the separation of two dear friends. The theme of resiliency permeates this book, (“Mami says not to be sad, that we will both make new friends.” p. 29), which is an important concept to discuss with children.

If a youngster has a dear friend move away, “Evelyn Del Rey is Moving Away”, can be used as a springboard to talk about how to maintain a long-distance friendship. When Dr. Toughlove was a girl, the options were writing letters and an occasional phone call. There are so many more options to explore in today’s world. As is often the case, the children will come up with ideas and suggestions that the adult reader may not have thought of. This book also provides a chance to remind children to reach out to a new arrival in their school or social circle. There are multiple opportunities for rich discussions.

“Evelyn Del Rey is Moving Away”, is appropriate for children aged 4-7, and is available at the Queen Anne’s County Library.

Happy Thanksgiving!
