Her birthday is in November and even more importantly, her favorite meal of the year is served at Thanksgiving. Dr. Toughlove enjoys a stuffed turkey and all the trimmings as well as the focus on thankfulness and gratitude that Thanksgiving evokes.

With that as a backdrop, Dr. Toughlove thought November would be the perfect month to put a spotlight on a picture book entitled How to Say Thank You written by New York Times best-selling author Jean Reagan, and illustrated by Lee Wildish. If these names sound familiar to you it may be because Dr. Toughlove has previously reviewed several books from their highly successful How To …Series.

How to Say Thank You begins by asking the reader “What are you thankful for?” This book gives children lots of examples, just in case they have trouble formulating their own response. One of the things that makes this book so charming is that the vast majority of the examples cited in the book are every day events that bring joy. Things like coloring with a buddy, running into a friend, seeing a bunny in the woods, etc. can be pleasurable experiences.

Another theme that is embedded in this book is the importance of relationships. How to Say Thank You provides multiple opportunities to use the illustrations to discuss the facial expressions and non-verbal gestures that very often demonstrate loving exchanges. As usual, Jean Reagan uses words beautifully to convey heartfelt examples of expressing thankfulness, and Lee Wildish embellishes her words in a whimsical, engaging way. Instead of one or two protagonists, several children take turns being thankful, which in a subtle way lets children know that this book tells its story through the eyes of all children.

How to Say Thank You can be used as a springboard to remind children (and adults as well) to embrace thankfulness and thoughtfulness all year long. This delightful book is suggested for readers aged 3-7 and can be found at your local library.

Happy Thanksgiving!
