Secretly they each looked at each other’s lunches with disdain. Words like EW, YUCK, and GROSS were thought by both girls but not stated. Until one day, when she could no longer hid her true feelings, Lily told Salma what she really thought of her sandwich. Predictably, Salma was insulted and shared with Lily that her sandwich smelled bad. Things went downhill from there. Lily and Salma’s classmates got into the act and began to take sides and jabs and insults took over.

Dr. Toughlove doesn’t want to give the entire story away, but let it suffice to say that a visit to the principal’s office occurred and both Lily and Salma were held accountable for their role in the mayhem that ensued. Fortunately, the story has a happy ending and the themes of acceptance of different cultures and customs prevailed.

So, how can parents, caregivers, teachers and children use this book to have a broader conversation about kindness, compassion and acceptance? Dr. Toughlove suggests that readers begin by talking about the colorful and dynamic illustrations that Tricia Tusa has created to support and enhance the authors’ words. Emphasizing how much alike Lily and Salma are could be used to discuss how to build relationships based on common interests. Questions about what to say when you meet someone who has different customs or traditions than yours can be explored. The possibilities for rich discussions are plentiful.

The Sandwich Swap, written by Her Majesty Queen Raina al-Abdullah and Kelly DiPucchio and illustrated by Tricia Tusa is suggested for readers aged 4-8 and can be found at your local library.

Happy School Year!
