In honor of the new year, Dr. Toughlove thought she would introduce a book she just discovered and really loves – “Knight Owl”, written and illustrated by Christopher Denise. “Knight Owl” is a New York Times best-seller and a Caldecott Honor Book. Denise has enjoyed a distinguished career as an illustrator, but “Knight Owl” is his first book as an author and illustrator. Published in 2022, it is quickly becoming a favorite for parents, teachers, child care providers and most importantly, children.

Since the day he was born, Owl wanted one thing and one thing only – to be a Knight. Owl believed that Knights were brave, strong and clever, attributes that he felt sure he could achieve. So, the very determined and focused Owl enrolled in Knight School – and the challenges began. Swords and shields were heavy, and daytime naps interfered with valuable instruction. Despite these setbacks, Owl persevered and completed Knight School, and then the fun begins…

Dr. Toughlove doesn’t want to give the story away, but Christopher Denise does a masterful job of depicting Owl’s adventures as a Knight with bravery, ingenuity and humor. In addition, Denise’s eye-catching illustrations just jump off the page. Throw in a fire-mouthed dragon, and it is impossible not to be enthralled by the story and the visual presentation.

If you enjoy Owl’s antics, Dr. Toughlove suggests that you read book number two of the Knight Owl series, entitled “Knight Owl and Early Bird”. It would be an interesting exercise to compare and contrast the two books, a task that children very often love to do. Exploring a book through the eyes of children can often be an eye-opening experience.

If you want to read a book filled with hope, courage and optimism, “Knight Owl” is the book for you. “Knight Owl” is appropriate for children aged 4-8, and is available at your local library.

Happy 2025!
