I Am a Masterpiece by Mia Armstrong

Dr. Toughlove reviewed I Am A Masterpiece by Mia Armstrong and illustrated by Alexandra Thompson. Happy Women’s History Month!

March is Women’s History Month, and our country puts a spotlight on women’s accomplishments and contributions to our society. To that end, Dr. Toughlove has decided to review an extraordinary children’s book entitled I Am A Masterpiece. This picture book is written by Mia Armstrong and illustrated by Alexandra Thompson.

What makes this book so unique? For one thing it is written by Mia Armstrong (with Marissa Moss), who was born with Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome is defined by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development as a set of cognitive and physical symptoms that result from having an extra chromosome. In Mia’s author’s note she writes that she was born with an extra chromosome that makes her brain learn differently. Things that include speech, and other stages of development may be delayed.

The sub-title of I Am A Masterpiece is An Empowering Story About Inclusivity and Growing Up with Down Syndrome, and this book embodies that spirit to perfection.  Mia writes about some of her experiences living with Down Syndrome. Through the use of appealing illustrations, speech bubbles and engaging text, Mia explains her journey trying to help those around her recognize her strengths and embrace inclusivity.

While I Am A Masterpiece has a positive tone, it does not paint an idyllic picture. Sometimes characters in the story stare, ignore and criticize Mia. The book does a wonderful job of acknowledging these inevitable occurrences, yet showcasing patience and acceptance. The book’s superpower is its ability to take a challenging physical condition and present it with realism, dignity and compassion.

Mia Armstrong is an actor, model and voice-over artist. She is a Down Syndrome advocate and has made her voice heard in a variety of venues. And as a young teenager, she’s just getting started. Dr. Toughlove can’t wait to see how Mia Armstrong blazes a trail for individuals with disabilities.

I Am A Masterpiece an inspiring book about a young woman whose pursuits are making history. While this book is recommended for youngsters aged 3-8, Dr. Toughlove believes that children and adults alike will enjoy reading it and learning about Mia Armstrong. In the back of the book there is additional information about Down Syndrome, written using a question-and-answer format that will appeal to readers of any age.  I Am A Masterpiece is available at your local library.
