Welcome to June 2023! With the school year coming to a close, Dr. Toughlove thought it was an ideal time to put a spotlight on teachers by reviewing the New York Times best-selling book “Because I Had a Teacher” written by Kobi Yamada and illustrated by Natalie Russell.
This small book has very few words, but the words contain strong reminders of the power of teaching and learning. One of Dr. Toughlove’s favorite passages is “Because I had a teacher, I love to learn” (p. 3). Another gem is “Because I had a teacher, I discovered that there are lots of ways of being smart” (p. 11). These are just a couple of examples of the simple yet profound messages in this book about how children learn, and how to inspire them.
Natalie Russell’s illustrations serve to compliment Kobi Yamada’s words to perfection. As is often the case with picture books, the illustrations present ideas and perspectives that are implied but unstated. This book lends itself to great conversations about knowledge, acceptance and positive self-esteem, just to name a few.
Dr. Toughlove believes this book would make a wonderful gift for a child about to enter school for the first time, or for a teacher who has been particularly impactful. It also provides an opportunity for a parent or caregiver to turn back the hands of time and discuss their favorite teacher with a youngster. Kids very often like to hear stories about the grown-ups in their lives, and “Because I Had a Teacher” is the perfect vehicle for that kind of discussion.
“Because I Had a Teacher” is an excellent read aloud book and adults usually enjoy it as much as children do. Dr. Toughlove is confident that once you read “Because I Had a Teacher”, you will want to read other books written by Kobi Yamada. His books are developmentally appropriate for children aged 3 and up, and manage to invite youngsters to be introspective and thoughtful in an age-appropriate way.
“Because I Had a Teacher” is available at the Queen Anne’s County Library.
