Happy August! Below is a review of This Is A School by John Schu. A great back to school selection! If you are interested in other children’s picture books with a back to school theme, check out the link here. The Back to School list is the second entry.

Since a new school year is set to begin later this month, Dr. Toughlove thought it would be an opportune time to review the book “This Is A School” written by John Schu and illustrated by Veronica Miller Jamison.
If you know a youngster who will be attending pre-school or kindergarten for the first time, or is entering a new school environment, this is the book for you. John Schu’s book begins by introducing a student, then a teacher, a hallway, a classroom, and so on. On many pages there are very few words – in those instances Veronica Miller Jamison allows the pictures to do much of the talking. There are ample opportunities to talk about facial expressions, which emanate joy, wonder, and in some cases trepidation. All of these feelings can be discussed in an age-appropriate way.
One of the things that Dr. Toughlove loves most about “This is a School” is the fact that all aspects of the school day are depicted. In addition to traditional classroom scenes the story discusses snack time, recess, holiday celebrations, school beautification, art and music class, and so much more. The inclusive pictures show children and adults of all colors and capabilities.
Dr. Toughlove believes that in order for schools to run smoothly EVERYONE who works there needs to be recognized for their contributions. Towards the end of the book, John Schu clearly states what he has been inferring throughout the story – that librarians, coaches, helpers, staff, principals, teachers, kids and friends are all important contributors to the life of a school. It is important for children to understand that the entire school community can contribute to their success. Parents, grandparents, caregivers and older siblings can reinforce that concept using “This Is A School” as a platform to share those ideas.
If your child loves this book, there are a number of follow up activities and worksheets available on John Schu’s website.
If you are looking for additional books with a “back to school” theme, Dr. Toughlove suggests that you check out the Just for Kids page of her website at https://carolfranksrandall.com/just-for-kids/ The Back-to-School Reading List is the second entry on the page.
“This Is A School” is a great book for kids aged 4-7, and is available at your local library.
