Librarian Mychal Threets has been receiving a lot of acclaim for resurrecting a television show beloved by many – Reading Rainbow. He can now add children’s book author to his already impressive resume. You won’t want to miss Dr. Toughlove’s review of his recently published book, I’m So Happy You Are Here: A Celebration of Library Joy. Enjoy!

As summer winds down, Dr. Toughlove is reminded of how much she loved going to the library during her youth, particularly during the summer months. Her first foray into the world of libraries was her neighborhood Bookmobile, which came once a week and was an easy, street-free walk. Dr. Toughlove was delighted when her mother allowed her to walk five blocks to the nearest branch library, which had more books and more space to sit and read a book right on the spot.
So, it is no wonder that Dr. Toughlove fell in love with a relatively new book entitled I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy, written by Mychal Threets and illustrated by Lorraine Nam. If you are of a certain age, you may remember the television show Reading Rainbow (televised 1983-2006) hosted by LeVar Burton. Mychal Threets is the new host of Reading Rainbow and is a literacy advocate and librarian. It is only fitting that his first book celebrates what he calls the love of his life – the library.
When Dr. Toughlove first read this book, she was struck by Lorraine Nam’s colorful, jump-off-the page illustrations. While Dr. Toughlove loved spending time at the library, it was a quiet place where conversations, unless they pertained specifically to a book, were rare. Libraries have evolved to become community centers that are vibrant, diverse, and sometimes (perish the thought), noisy. Kids are often in different spaces within the building working on puzzles, doing art work, playing instruments and of course, reading books. The spaces are configured to provide multiple activities for kids with different interests and strengths to enjoy. All of this and more can be found in this book.
When you read, I’m So Happy You’re Here you will be struck by the diverse patrons who are depicted. The notion of a library where everyone belongs is repeated using different words and illustrations over and over again.
If Dr. Toughlove had to use three words to describe this book they would be joyful, inspiring and inclusive. Every word and every illustration portray these sentiments. I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy, is a compelling read any time of year, but may be a wonderful selection to enjoy as summer reading programs are near completion and school has yet to begin. This book is recommended for youngsters aged 4-8, and is available at your local library.
