On October 25th I made my fourth annual author visit with undergraduate students who attend Pace University’s School of Education. During both sessions, I spoke with Dr. Elizabeth Smith and her students who are housed at the Pleasantville Campus. The students are currently beginning their journey as pre-service teachers and are in classrooms as part of their practicum experience.
The session focused primarily on my first book, Jamal and Me, but the students were aware of all three of my books and I answered questions posed by Dr. Smith and a number of students. Some of our discussions centered around the New York State Education Department’s Culturally Responsive Sustaining Education Framework, which helps educators create student-centered classrooms that celebrate diversity. The conversations were rich and the students also discussed some of their practicum experiences.
Below are quotes from some of the reflections the students wrote after my visit.
“I enjoyed having the chance to speak with Dr. Carol Franks-Randall last Wednesday during class. It was interesting to discuss incorporating diversity into children’s literature, as is connects to the New York State Education Department’s Culturally Responsive Sustaining Education Framework. I feel it is important for students to see themselves being represented in the stories they read, and Dr. Franks-Randall demonstrated that. I would recommend having Dr. Franks-Randall return again to speak to future students.” A.S., Pace University Student
“I am so grateful we got the chance to meet with Dr. Carol Franks-Randall. It was really interesting to hear from an author of children’s books, especially when the books portray important themes. It was nice to hear the personal voices behind these books and what led her to write them. I look forward to working with her books in the future.” H.V., Pace University Student
“I first would like to say that I am very grateful to you for taking the time to share your profound experiences regarding your journey as a children’s book author and your inspiring dedication to the children/students. Your insights and anecdotes were not only informative but also deeply touching and inspiring. As someone who truly loves children’s books, I have always found wonder in a lot of these amazing stories. Your words resonated with me on a deep level, as I share your enthusiasm for the magic contained within these books. I want to thank you for not only creating these beautiful books, but for also being a source of inspiration for aspiring educators, authors and readers. Your dedication and wisdom is extremely helpful and guiding for those of us who truly appreciate the magic and power that can be found within the pages of a children’s book. Thank you again for taking the time to speak to us about your journey.” K.T., Pace University Student
I want to thank Dr. Smith and her wonderful students for engaging in enlightening and rich discussions about children’s literature. It is inspiring for me to meet future teachers and hear first-hand their enthusiasm for the teaching and learning process.
